Vents, Borders and Inlays
Some details don’t get noticed right away, and that’s the point! We build custom vents, floor borders, and inlays that match your flooring perfectly and add structure where it matters.

Custom Flooring Details
We offer luxury flooring, but the part we’re known for is our detailed work. Everything we do is custom. If we’re building custom vents, they’re made from the same material we use when we install your floor. Borders and inlays are drawn up to fit your space exactly and add depth. These flooring accessories are the pieces that really make your floor complete.

Custom Vents
Every vent we make is custom. We build them for your floor and the way it was installed, so everything lines up exactly. We make custom vents in two styles: flush mount for hardwood floors, and top mount for vinyl.
Flush mount vents sit level with the floor. They’re really subtle and clean, and once installed, they basically disappear. Top mount vents sit on top of the surface and work best with vinyl floors.
- We build vents in any size or shape
- Use the same flooring material for a perfect colour match
- Precise custom cuts for a unique shape you love

Flooring Borders and Inlays
Borders and inlays add structure and detail to floors. They work especially well in open concept spaces where you want to define different areas without changing materials. Please note we only install borders and inlays on engineered floors.

Flooring Accessories: Borders
A floor border outlines a room or section of your flooring. It can be subtle or bold, depending on the design. Some people keep it clean with a single plank in the same wood. Others go for contrast using a different colour or wood species. Both options work!
What we offer:
- Single or double plank width
- Matching or contrasting wood
- Custom layouts designed for your floor plan
- Works well with patterns like herringbone
We’ve done wood floor borders in entryways, kitchens, dining rooms, and hallways. It’s a simple way to make the space feel more finished. A herringbone floor with a border looks especially sharp.
Flooring Accessories: Inlays
Inlays are thin metal strips built into the floor. They add a clean line or can divide between spaces without adding any bulk. It’s a beautiful way to add some detail, and it looks good in both modern and traditional layouts.
Materials we use:
- Brass
- Stainless steel
- Aluminum
You can use inlays as a single accent or pair them with a floor border. We’ve done designs that run down long hallways, wrap around kitchen islands, or line the edges of living rooms. A herringbone floor border with a metal inlay is one of the most requested.

FAQs
Borders and inlays are best done during a new install, since everything is laid out and cut together. That said, if you already have engineered hardwood and want to upgrade it with a border or inlay, we can sometimes retrofit the design depending on the condition of the floor and how it was installed.
In those cases, we’d need to assess the subfloor, plank spacing, and overall layout. If it’s doable, we’ll cut into the existing floor, install the new detail, and refinish everything to blend. It’s a bit more involved, but it can be done.
Custom vents work well anywhere you’d normally have a floor vent, but they really stand out in open, visible areas where details matter. Entryways, living rooms, hallways, and even kitchens are great spots. These are the places where standard metal grates tend to look out of place, and where a flush or matched vent makes the whole floor feel more finished.
In open-concept spaces, where your flooring flows through multiple rooms, a custom vent helps maintain that continuous, uninterrupted look. If you’re installing luxury flooring, especially wide planks or herringbone, it makes a big difference to have vents that blend in instead of interrupting the layout.
We can absolutely do that. Most people want their vents to match their floors, but some prefer contrast, like a metal vent on wood, or a darker wood vent against lighter planks. That’s totally doable. We work with a variety of hardwoods, stains, and metals like brass, stainless steel, and black aluminum. You can choose something that blends in or stands out, depending on the look you’re going for.
Just let us know during the design phase, and we’ll help you pick something that fits the rest of your space. Even if your flooring came from another supplier, we can usually source or match the right material.
We measure and cut everything by hand. Every border or inlay is templated to your exact floor layout. When we hit a tricky area, like a curved wall, stair base, or tight corner, we take extra time to get the cuts right. That might mean scribing, angle matching, or creating custom filler pieces to maintain clean lines.
The goal is to make the transition look intentional. If the curve is too sharp or the corner too tight for standard planks, we’ll work out a design detail that looks natural, not like we were trying to force it. This is the kind of work that separates standard installs from truly custom floors.
Yes, but we’ll need to look at the details first. Uneven subfloors or slight height variations can affect how vents, borders, and inlays sit. For vents, especially flush mount, we need a flat surface so everything aligns properly. If there’s too much variation, we might recommend a top mount style instead, especially for vinyl.
With borders and inlays, it’s even more important. These features rely on precision. If the floor isn’t level or if there are transitions between rooms, we’ll adjust the layout or use leveling techniques to keep everything clean and flush. In some cases, we might prep or rework small sections of the subfloor before starting.
We’ll always let you know upfront what’s possible and what might need extra prep. The goal is to make sure the finished result looks sharp and lasts.
